Something About Us

We are a small church located in Covina, California.  Our membership is made up of the membership of two small congregations that merged a few years ago.  One of our predecessor congregations was made up of Filipino-American folks and the other largely Anglo-American.  In recent years we have sought to reach out to other ethnic communities that are represented by the families that live in our neighborhood.  We are a wonderful mixture of cultures and backgrounds and we believe that experience enriches all of us.  So, no matter who you are, whatever your heritage, you will find a warm welcome here!  Southern California is truly a vast melting-pot of cultures and traditions and we seek to emulate that in our faith community.

Sunday worship and sunday school

Our Sunday worship is at 9:30 a.m.  Children join us in worship until the conclusion of the children's moment and then they are dismissed to attend Sunday School that is tailored with activities designed especially for them.  On some special Sundays, like Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday, the younger people remain for the entire worship service.  Of course, parents can opt for having youngsters remain with them for the whole service at any time.  It's up to each family.

after worship

We think it is important for our members to have the opportunity to participate in activities and fellowship that compliment the worship experience.  Early Christians thought so too and we know that a shared meal was part of the worship gathering in the very earliest days of the Christian tradition.  We have taken that shared meal tradition and moved it into our Sunday activities by offering a fellowship meal we serve at about 12:30 p.m. almost every Sunday.  There is never any charge for our community meal and everyone is welcome.  What happens between the end of worship -- that is about 10:40 -- and lunch?  We do lots of things with that time.  First we offer time for coffee and visiting, and then those who wish to do so gather for some kind of religious education activity.  It could be an in-depth look at a book in the Bible over several weeks, or a shorter program of activities relating to issues we all face such as dealing with grief.  You will find a schedule of currently planned activities on this site.

Our Denomination

UCC logoWe are an affiliate church of the United Church of Christ (UCC).  You can learn about our denomination and our presence in the nation and the world by visiting the United Church of Christ web site.  You will also find a page on this site that offers a fun look at how our denomination sees itself.  Essentially, we are a mainline Protestant denomination that springs from a long line of denominational mergers over many years.  The last merger that created the United Church of Christ occurred in 1957.  The desire to join with others in being the church together is perhaps one of the characteristics that most defines us as a denomination and as a local church.
